Lululemon Fitness Industry Night - Fashion Valley Mall

There’s a term in every industry and it’s “industry night.” It’s especially prevalent in the nightclub industry, where those that work in that industry typically need an alternate day to hang out with fellow colleagues.

On October 20, 2016, Lululemon had its own industry night, this time for those in the fitness industry. It’s a bit of twist on the aforementioned, but the Lululemon Fashion Valley store invited San Diego area fitness industry workers for a night of music, drinks and luon.

Personal trainers, run coaches, front desk associates from local gyms and many more came out on this night for some fun at this popular store.

Lululemon Leadership Conference - Closing Party

The three-day Lululemon Leadership Conference crescendoed to this final night of dancing, singing and, well more dancing. The ballroom and foyer spaces that had been used for meetings, keynote speakers, meals, breakout sessions and much more was transformed into party central.

From a massive Just Dance dance floor set-up, to the karaoke room to the main room that featured myself, DJ Urn and Mark Woodyard entertaining attendees, it was a great night. Sharing the stage was a fun experience, as the three of us traded short sets and kept the energy up.

Mark Woodyard is a talented musician that has some cool takes on popular pop and hip songs. Here’s one clip from the night of him performing a Sexual Healing/F**kin Problems mash-up.

On the final day of the Lululemon Conference, October 8, 2015, I was scheduled to play one set during the day, which was the morning breakfast. The plan, again, was to play some upbeat house tracks. But on that morning, I wasn’t feeling it. I also was worried about playing repeat tracks -- which likely no one would have noticed -- but there tends to be some genre fatigue (I think I just made that up) especially when playing for the same group of people for two straight days.

As the breakfast started to unfold, and there were just a handful of people early on, I decided to play something acoustic. At that point, I just felt that was the vibe to go with, so I played similar tunes and eventually worked my way into a little pop. And I also got to live out a tiny little dream, play a Barenaked Ladies track in the country of Canada during a live gig.

Lululemon Leadership Conference - Day 2

Day two (October 7, 2015) of the conference was pretty special, especially for the San Diegans. The daily sweat session was a November Project workout. November Project is a free fitness community that is in 26 cities throughout the U.S. and Canada. Vancouver has its own tribe, and they relocated their regular Wednesday workout to the Westin Bayshore where Lululemon ambassadors and November Project - San Diego co-leaders, Lauren Padula and Angelo Neroni led the workout for more than 400 people.

Fourth Set (Lunch): The scheduled genre for this set was 80s freestyle and dance. But since the menu consisted of Mexican fare, conference organizers wanted to set the tone with appropriately themed music. Day one (October 6, 2015) of my duties at the 2015 Lululemon Leadership conference began with a 5:30 a.m. wake up call, getting dressed, hopping in a cab and making my way from my hotel to the conference hotel. I was scheduled to play four sets throughout the day: breakfast, lunch and two additional short afternoon breaks.

First Set (Breakfast): Consisted of mostly varying sub genres of house music; attendees were either coming directly from their rooms or from their morning “sweat” sessions, which was either a spin or yoga class. One of the company mantra’s is “sweat once a day,” and that even includes at their conference.

Second Set (Lunch): The foyer I DJ’d in all week was directly outside of the main general session ballroom where all 1,000 attendees assembled. Each time they exited was essentially a break, so I made sure the first song, for whichever genre I was playing for that set, was something upbeat and recognizable.

So yes, the 80s Pop set kicked off with Tears for Fears.
