A Romantic, Full-Circle Love Story in Escondido
Alaina and Matt’s wedding at Rancho Guejito was the perfect blend of heartfelt moments, personality, and an unforgettable dance floor. As a San Diego wedding DJ, I get to witness a lot of incredible love stories, but theirs truly stood out.
Their journey started over a decade ago at UW-Madison with a not-so-typical meet-cute involving a party, an iPod Nano, and some “classic old man rock.” After years of growth, time apart on opposite coasts, and eventually finding their way back to each other, their wedding day felt like a true celebration of resilience, connection, and joy.
And that energy carried through every part of their wedding reception music and dance floor.
Setting the Tone: A Grand Entrance to Remember
Alaina and Matt made their entrance to “I Believe in a Thing Called Love” by The Darkness, a bold, high-energy choice that immediately set the tone for the night.
Moments like this are where thoughtful music selection really elevates the guest experience. As their DJ, my role is always to help couples create moments that feel authentic while building momentum for what’s to come.
Meaningful Dances That Told Their Story
The evening continued with a series of meaningful dances that reflected their personalities and relationships:
First Dance: “Wagon Wheel” by Old Crow Medicine Show
Mother/Son Dance: “Simple Man” by Lynyrd Skynyrd
Father/Daughter Dance: “My Wish” by Rascal Flatts
Mother/Bride Dance: “Girls Just Want to Have Fun” by Cyndi Lauper
Each song added another layer to the story of the day, balancing emotion, nostalgia and fun. These moments are a big part of what makes weddings feel personal and memorable, and they also help create a natural flow into the party portion of the night.
The Moment That Ignited the Dance Floor
One of the most memorable highlights of the night, and one of my favorite wedding dance floor ideas, came from Alaina and her mom.
They surprised guests with a choreographed dance to “Girls Just Want to Have Fun.” As soon as they finished, they invited everyone to join them on the dance floor. That’s when I dropped “HOT TO GO!” by Chappell Roan… and from that moment on, the dance floor was completely packed.
This is a perfect example of how a well-timed transition and interactive moment can instantly shift the energy of a room. From there, the night flowed seamlessly into a nonstop party.
Building an Unforgettable Dance Floor Experience
From throwbacks to modern hits, the music was curated to keep every generation engaged. Some standout moments included:
Early hype: “Jump Around” – House of Pain
Dance floor staples: “Yeah!” – Usher
Sing-along favorites: “I Wanna Dance with Somebody” – Whitney Houston
Party anthems: “Don’t Stop the Party” – Pitbull
Nostalgic hits: “Mr. Brightside” – The Killers
We also blended genres throughout the night—hip hop, pop, country, Latin, and throwbacks—to create a dynamic, high-energy experience that never felt repetitive. This kind of thoughtful mixing is key to keeping a dance floor full and is a core part of what I focus on as a San Diego wedding DJ.
A Perfect Last Dance to Close the Night
To wrap up the celebration, we brought everyone together one last time for “Love Story (Taylor’s Version)” by Taylor Swift.
Ending the night with a song that guests can sing at the top of their lungs is always a winning move. It creates a shared moment that leaves everyone on a high note and gives couples a memory they’ll never forget.
